Summary

Mrs。 Dalloway is a novel by Virginia Woolf that details a day in the life of Clarissa Dalloway, a fictional high-society woman in post-World War I England。 It is one of Woolf's best-known novels。

Created from two short stories, Mrs Dalloway in Bond Street and the unfinished The Prime Minister, the novel addresses Clarissa's preparations for a party she will host that evening。 With an interior perspective, the story travels forwards and back in time and in and out of the characters' minds to construct an image of Clarissa's life and of the inter-war social structure。 In October 2005, Mrs。 Dalloway was included on TIME magazine's list of the 100 best English-language novels written since 1923。

This was just okay for me。 It is the story of one day in the life of Clarissa Dalloway。 It is told in a jumbled fashion through the eyes of nearly everyone she comes into contact with that day。 The way it jumps from viewpoint to viewpoint can be jarring, but it becomes less so as the story goes on, only because as the reader, you begin to adjust to the style。 Clarissa is described by her friends and acquaintances as being a bit snobby。 In this glimpse of her day, she is preparing to throw an ela This was just okay for me。 It is the story of one day in the life of Clarissa Dalloway。 It is told in a jumbled fashion through the eyes of nearly everyone she comes into contact with that day。 The way it jumps from viewpoint to viewpoint can be jarring, but it becomes less so as the story goes on, only because as the reader, you begin to adjust to the style。 Clarissa is described by her friends and acquaintances as being a bit snobby。 In this glimpse of her day, she is preparing to throw an elaborate party。 An old flame turns up, and an old friend, none of the storylines are resolved, which makes it hard to feel anything about this work after reading it。 。。。more

This is probably the third time I have read this, and it still is lovely。 There is something on every page to consider and think about。 Too many quotes to include in my review, too many thoughts。 But what a new kind of writing for 1925 when it first came out。 Highly recommend。

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 Zeer mooi boek。 Virginia Woolf schrijft haar boeken aan 1 stuk door zonder hoofstukken, en slechts heel af en toe eens een alinea。 Daarom vergde het lezen van dit boek best wat concentratie。 De manier waarop ze gevoelens en gebeurtenissen omschrijft zijn heel mooi en vaak ontroerend。 Ze gebruikt hiervoor geregeld mooie metaforen。 Het verhaal gaat over Clarissa Dalloway, de vrouw van Richard Dalloway。 Ze behoort tot de upper class en ze organiseert een feestje。 Het boek gaat over 1 dag, maar spri Zeer mooi boek。 Virginia Woolf schrijft haar boeken aan 1 stuk door zonder hoofstukken, en slechts heel af en toe eens een alinea。 Daarom vergde het lezen van dit boek best wat concentratie。 De manier waarop ze gevoelens en gebeurtenissen omschrijft zijn heel mooi en vaak ontroerend。 Ze gebruikt hiervoor geregeld mooie metaforen。 Het verhaal gaat over Clarissa Dalloway, de vrouw van Richard Dalloway。 Ze behoort tot de upper class en ze organiseert een feestje。 Het boek gaat over 1 dag, maar springt gedurende heel het boek voortdurend naar het verleden。 Op die manier leren we verschillende personen kennen die in haar leven een belangrijke rol hebben gespeeld en nog steeds spelen。 Het tweede hoofdpersonage van dit boek is Septimus。 Hij was soldaat en heeft meegevochten in de Oorlog。 Beide personages hebben gemeen dat ze beide een beetje in het verleden leven。 Hoewel ze dit allebei op een andere manier doen。 Septimus zit door zijn traumatische tijd in het leger door de oorlog met zijn hoofd eigenlijk volledig in het verleden en heeft daardoor geen besef meer heeft wat er in het heden gebeurt。 Hij is de vat op de realiteit een beetje kwijt。 Mrs Dalloway kijkt eerder op een nostalgische manier terug naar haar verleden。Het fascinerende aan Mrs Dalloway is dat je haar beter leert kennen in het boek, maar dat ze op één of andere manier toch nog steeds een mysterieus persoon blijft。 Tegen het einde van het boek kan je haar nog steeds niet helemaal goed inschatten。 Ze gedraagt zich eigenlijk regelmatig een beetje te hautain waardoor ze vervelend zou moeten vinden, maar toch is er iets aan haar persoonlijkheid waardoor je haar eigenlijk eerder apprecieert en op één of andere manier toch charmant vindt。 Bijna heel het verhaal gaat over Mrs Dalloway, maar ik heb het gevoel gehad dat je uiteindelijk meer te weten bent gekomen over de gevoelens van de personen rond haar heen。 Zo is er Peter Walsh die al heel zijn leven heel erg verliefd is op Clarissa。 Zo is er Sally Saton die vroeger een beetje een losbol was en vroeger een soort geheime kortstondige relatie met Clarissa heeft gehad。 。。。more

This is one of those books that has been on my "to read" list since college (I won't own up to how many years ago that was!)。 I suppose I was intimidated by the stream-of-consciousness tag。 I struggled through "Ulysses" in college, so there you go。 Well, this was worth the wait。Yes, it's modern, but accessible。 The writing had a real musical quality to - you can get carried away in the rhythm and the cadence of the prose。 And no, not much happens, but yet so much happens。 In the course of a day This is one of those books that has been on my "to read" list since college (I won't own up to how many years ago that was!)。 I suppose I was intimidated by the stream-of-consciousness tag。 I struggled through "Ulysses" in college, so there you go。 Well, this was worth the wait。Yes, it's modern, but accessible。 The writing had a real musical quality to - you can get carried away in the rhythm and the cadence of the prose。 And no, not much happens, but yet so much happens。 In the course of a day as Mrs。 Dalloway prepares for her party we see the interior lives of the novel's characters。 There's a shell shocked WWI veteran, a former suitor, a former potential lover, politicians, doctors, and many more。 As we see inside the characters we see internal selves。 And though so many novels do this, I can't think of one that does it with such intoxicating and hypnotic writing。 I got lost in the book in all the best ways。 。。。more

I had such high hopes for this book, but honestly I just felt disappointed。 There’s no doubt in my mind that Virginia Woolf is one of the most beautiful writers, which is why I didn’t give Mrs Dalloway lower than 3 stars, but honestly I felt like I was wading through thick mud from start to finish。 My mind kept wandering off onto other things because there was so much going on, not in terms of plot (because let’s be honest, there isn’t much of one), but a sudden and unannounced shift in narrativ I had such high hopes for this book, but honestly I just felt disappointed。 There’s no doubt in my mind that Virginia Woolf is one of the most beautiful writers, which is why I didn’t give Mrs Dalloway lower than 3 stars, but honestly I felt like I was wading through thick mud from start to finish。 My mind kept wandering off onto other things because there was so much going on, not in terms of plot (because let’s be honest, there isn’t much of one), but a sudden and unannounced shift in narrative, a complete stranger popping up out of nowhere and talking about their life, repetitive sentences… it was all a bit of a blur。 That being said, I’d much rather have read a book based wholly around Clarissa, Peter Walsh and Sally - this was a part of the story that I actually felt invested in but I didn’t feel it was explored as much as I would have liked。 I skim read the latter half of this book because I simply had no impetus to even pick it up and finish it。 Maybe I’m a heathen, but Mrs Dalloway was not for me。 。。。more

beautifully written, a bit like a poem that has dressed up as a book, sometimes she knows what she is going on about and I don’t have a clue but she writes it nicely so I don’t mind that much and it becomes clear in a page or two, she is a bit rambly though and sometimes too subtle, feel like I need to read the book at least twice to catch all the things that went over my head

It seems silly to “critique” a book nearly a 100 years old, but I’ll do it anyway…Because wow wow wow was this one of the most captivating and heart felt books I’ve ever read。 This book should be required reading, for everyone。 It’s my first experience with Woolf’s writing and the writing style at first was difficult for me to grasp, but once I got the hang of it (admittedly with the help of SparkNotes), I really couldn’t put this book down。I’ve never before read a book that really does capture It seems silly to “critique” a book nearly a 100 years old, but I’ll do it anyway…Because wow wow wow was this one of the most captivating and heart felt books I’ve ever read。 This book should be required reading, for everyone。 It’s my first experience with Woolf’s writing and the writing style at first was difficult for me to grasp, but once I got the hang of it (admittedly with the help of SparkNotes), I really couldn’t put this book down。I’ve never before read a book that really does capture the “human experience” as well as this one does。 It’s amazing to see how I resonated so well with these people living 100 years before me, because in the end, human nature doesn’t change。 It’s written almost in a “stream of consciousness” sort of way, the narrator having their own thoughts, and each and every character we pass all having theirs as well, all blending together in these run-on sentences and all contradicting and jumbling together, excellently painting a picture of a busy day in the city。Day!! One day!! The entire story is contained in a single day!! And each character introduced has their own backstories and motivations that we delve into, making me feel like I really truly know these people and I know all their flaws and reasonings and desires。Woolf makes one muse about existence itself, and war, and peace, and trauma, and mental health, and self acceptance and identity, and sex and sexuality, and gender roles and feminism and marriage and love and it’s all woven together in this delightful little story about a woman throwing a party and the people who’s lives she’s touched along the way。 I will be quickly adding more of Woolf to my library! 。。。more

The writing style is unique, feels like we are inside their minds and thought process。 I can relate to some of the topics like old age (even though im still in my 20s), nostalgia, and time。 Time move fast and slow at the same time in this novel, how the characters can get lost in their thoughts and then 30 minutes has passed。 I also like Woolf's portrayal of mental illness, one's is really prominent, while the other's are not shown explicitly。 Overall its an enjoyable read The writing style is unique, feels like we are inside their minds and thought process。 I can relate to some of the topics like old age (even though im still in my 20s), nostalgia, and time。 Time move fast and slow at the same time in this novel, how the characters can get lost in their thoughts and then 30 minutes has passed。 I also like Woolf's portrayal of mental illness, one's is really prominent, while the other's are not shown explicitly。 Overall its an enjoyable read 。。。more
